topHow do I subscribe/unsubscribe from the mailing list?
To subscribe to our mailing list, you should send an email to majordomo@bham.ac.uk with the text "subscribe wayfarers" in the email body (leave the subject blank). The list traffic level is one or two emails a week.
To unsubscribe, follow the same procedure with "unsubscribe wayfarers" in the body.
topHow do I become a member of the society? How much does it cost?
Membership costs £5 for the year - this gets you a 20% discount at Cotswolds which means that you only have to spend £25 at Cotswold Outdoors to make your money back!
To become a member ask to join at a signup session or join online here. If you join online then you will still need to come to signups to pick up your membership card before you can use your discount at Cotswold Outdoors.
topCan I join the society if I'm not a student at the University of Birmingham?
Yes you can! You will need to fill out an extra form and if you have never been to the UofB as a student then you may have to pay an external membership fee (nothing expensive). Please visit us at signups to talk further!
topHow do I sign up for trips?
Please see the Signups Page
topHow much do trips cost?
Day walks cost £8 and weekend trips are £35.
topCan you sign me up now, if I promise to pay later?
No, sorry, we need to have the money when you sign up for a trip (we've had some problems with payment in the past).
topCan I pay by cheque?
Yes – please make cheques payable to University of Birmingham Guild of Students.
topDo walks include many hills?
Yes, we will be walking up and down hills on all our walks. While we generally separate out into groups based on experience and ability, you should expect walks to involve a bit of physical exertion.
topDo I have to be fit to come on walks?
You should be be reasonably physically fit, yes. Day walks tend to be less strenuous than weekends. We advise that you come on a day trip before attempting a weekend, especially if you are unsure of your fitness levels! Often on a weekend trip we will split into several groups which will attempt walks of different difficulties
topWhat should I bring/wear?
See our equipment page for a full list of what to bring. However, the important things are: walking boots, a waterproof jacket, trousers that aren't jeans, lots of warm clothes, and some food.
topWill I be OK wearing trainers?
Unless specifically stated on the trip email do not wear trainers. If you do not bring decent walking boots on a weekend trip you will be endangering your health and that of those around you - you will not allowed to come walking.
On some day walks (typically Malverns and Lickey Hills), trainers may be acceptable. This will be confirmed by email/facebook.
If you have any questions then please email us at or ask at signups.
topWill I be OK wearing jeans?
Jeans are a definite no-no. It's pretty likely to rain during any season in the hilly parts of the UK, and when denim gets wet, it stays wet and the chances of the wearer catching hypothermia are quite high.
topWhen are we meeting for the
trip? / I've signed up for the trip but haven't received any details; what should I do?
The trip details email is generally sent out on the Thursday evening prior to the trip. If you haven't heard anything by Friday morning (weekends) or Friday evening (day walks), please either get in touch with a member of committee, or email us at .
